Johnson seemed to be untouchable, until he wasn't any more. What a Prime Ministership it has been. He just lurched from one scandal for which he should have been sacked to the next. And it felt like he would literally get away with anything. The metaphorical shooting of people on sixth Avenue. Until the Pincher affair. And then things got hectic.
It is so typical as well; a sexual predator misbehaves, and all those in power who see him as 'one of them' try to deflect from the offending behaviour and talk about other people who should have acted in a different way; in this case, people who they claim should have stopped him from drinking so much. Yes right. It is a common reaction! But it disappoints every time. And this was in my opinion all in a day's work for Johnson; this scandal didn't really stand out among all the other ones. But I suppose it might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. The vital difference was probably the by-elections where the Tories had their arses kicked. If all Tory MPs fear for their jobs, suddenly the MP doesn't get away with everything anymore. And then while number 10 tried to lie its way out of the situation, the pressure mounted. And then the crush came.
There were a few days where you could barely put the kettle or another minister had resigned. And somewhere between me getting onto my bike to go to graduation and walking into the hall where the ceremony took place, the big announcement came. Very exciting times!
So now what? The leadership race has started. The chance that I will like the person who gets in next is slim. The chance that the electorate will like this person is already a lot bigger. And with toxic Johnson removed, maybe the Tories will regain their popularity. I surely hope not. But I do think that actions should have consequences. Johnson deserved to sod off and I'm glad he has. And it will be up to the electorate (in a few years' time at the latest) to decide what happens next. But in the meantime, I really hope that there will be a little bit of decency returning to Westminster. It's been sorely missing.
