Making plans with my MSc student

Every year we submit projects for MSc projects. Quite often, none of mine gets chosen. We don't have many students on the physical side, and most of the ones we have are not really into micropalaeontology. This year I was informed in January that I had two! It didn't last, though; one project was based on field and laboratory work, and the student who had chosen it suddenly acquired caring responsibilities that meant they wished to move to a project that could be done from any desk. The other student had a bit of a late start; they too acquired new caring responsibilities, but these were of a more temporary nature, so they only took a break. But now we are back on.

I went to main campus to have a good chat with him. This student had not worked with foraminifera before, and there was the need to talk through things a bit. And we had to make a start on thinking where to go on fieldwork. It was the first time since he started the project we had met face-to-face; so far we had always met online. It was good to kick this project into a higher gear! I hope we will be in the field soon…
