Preparing for the Eisteddfod

Last year I didn't have to go to the Eisteddfod. It was in South Wales, and the university decided it was too expensive to send more than a skeleton crew there. This year it is in the North again, so cheaper to get to. Hence that Ocean Sciences were again expected to show up in greater numbers. And I enjoy an opportunity to speak Welsh! But I struggle to be a walking piece of marketing equipment, and I struggle to be a children’s entertainer. And at the Eisteddfod, you sort of are both.

My specific task will be showing the public foraminifera. So I had to go through my sample collection to go and get some. I raided some samples from our Newborough fieldwork, and some from an MSc student I had years ago. I hope the public will like them!

We also have some tanks with a rock pool ecosystem, and we have stuff for painting shells onto cotton bags (I suppose I will be better able to explain this once we’ve done it) and a sort of Ocean Sciences dress-up box. We’ll see how it goes! I’m a bit apprehensive…

Spot the forams!
